4 Back-To-School Tips For Your Teen with Invisalign

Now that summer is over, it’s time for your teen to head back to school! From buying new supplies to organizing their transportation, there will be plenty of to-dos when preparing them for the new semester. However, if your teen is undergoing Invisalign, then there might be additional things they’ll have to consider for maintaining steady progress. To make their process easier, here are four tips from your orthodontist in Tucker to help them stay on track with their treatment!

Tip #1: Promote Good Dental Hygiene

One of the most important parts of your teen’s Invisalign process is to maintain good oral hygiene. The last thing you’d want is for them to develop a cavity, which can set back their treatment timeline. For this reason, you’ll want to encourage them to brush their teeth twice a day and after every meal, floss at least once daily, and visit their orthodontist twice a year or sooner for checkups and cleanings. Also, they can effectively prevent plaque, debris, and food particles from accumulating around their teeth by frequently cleaning their clear aligners.

Tip #2: Help Them Lessen Any Discomfort

It’s common for Invisalign patients to experience mild discomfort during their treatment, specifically when transitioning to a new set of clear trays. To help them avoid or relieve these sensations, make sure they switch to their next aligners before bed. This way they can sleep while their teeth grow accustomed to the new Invisalign trays. You can also encourage them to drink plenty of cool water to help numb the area of discomfort. Be sure they take over-the-counter pain relievers as instructed on the label.

Tip #3: Pack Their Meal with Soft Foods

Since the Invisalign process gradually shifts your teen’s teeth into more ideal positions, they may feel sore throughout the treatment. This can make eating certain foods challenging, especially meals like hard bread, crunchy carrots, and other treats that require excessive chewing. To make lunchtime easier on their pearly whites, try packing softer foods in their meal, such as oatmeal, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, cooked veggies, and applesauce. This way they can eat delicious and nutritious snacks comfortably!

Tip #4: Buy a Bright-Colored Storage Case

A common reason patients fall behind on their Invisalign timeline is due to misplacing their aligners. To avoid this, try getting your teen to store their clear trays in a bright-colored case during their mealtime. Not only will this protect their aligners from damage, but it’ll also prevent them from accidentally tossing them in the trash.

With these few tips, your teen will be more than ready to head back to school while keeping steady progress with Invisalign. Feel free to consult their orthodontist if there are any concerns throughout their treatment, and they’ll be glad to help!
